Objective

The most common treatment for resident health problems is pharmacological.

Little research has been done on how an intervention with a non-pharmacological method, such as a weighted blanket.

Through the eyes of nurses, we can learn how weighted blankets influence the health of residents in nursing homes.

The purpose of this study was to explore the nursing staff’s impressions of how an intervention with weighted blankets influenced residents’ health symptoms.

Methods

The study had a descriptive qualitative character with semi-structured interviews with 20 nursing staff working in nursing homes, and an inductive content analysis was applied.

Results

Nursing staff reported that the weighted blanket had a positive influence on residents’ health in the areas of sleep, physical activity, and psychological behavior.

The weighted blanket made them fall asleep faster, sleep was uninterrupted, and they felt more rested in the morning.

The nursing staff observed an increase in activity level as the resident became more energetic. The nursing staff also saw a reduction in negative psychological behaviors such as anxiety and worry.

Conclusion

This study indicates that the weighted blanket altered the resident’s expression of health in several crucial areas.

Deep pressure therapy indicates a health-enhancing treatment alternative for nursing home residents.
